What is Yot Kom Missions International (YKMI)?
Yot Kom Missions International (YKMI) is a Ugandan global health organization based in Gulu, specializing in international clinical elective programmes, humanitarian healthcare, university partnerships, research and community-based health education. It partners with universities, healthcare institutions, professional organizations and communities to develop healthcare professionals who are clinically competent, culturally responsive, ethically grounded and prepared to lead. Its flagship programme is Oral Health Uganda.
Where is YKMI based?
YKMI is based in Gulu, in northern Uganda. Its programmes take place in hospitals, health centres, schools, mobile outreach clinics and rural communities in Uganda.
What is Oral Health Uganda?
Oral Health Uganda (OHU) is the flagship programme of Yot Kom Missions International and the operational foundation of its humanitarian and educational activities. OHU delivers community outreach clinics, school oral health programmes, preventive care initiatives, mobile dental services and professional training throughout Uganda, and it is the primary platform for international dental electives, humanitarian dental missions and collaborative oral health projects.
What are YKMI’s mission and vision?
YKMI’s mission is to prepare compassionate healthcare professionals and strengthen communities by delivering world-class international clinical education, humanitarian health programmes, research, and collaborative partnerships that create lasting impact. Its vision is to become Africa’s leading community-based global health education platform, recognized internationally for excellence in clinical education, humanitarian healthcare, academic collaboration, and ethical global health partnerships.
What are YKMI’s five pillars?
YKMI advances healthcare through five interconnected pillars: international clinical elective programmes, humanitarian healthcare, university partnerships, research and innovation, and community partnership.
What are YKMI’s guiding principles?
YKMI is guided by six principles. Education before activity: every programme is designed around meaningful learning outcomes. Partnership before presence: we work with communities and institutions, never around them. Patients before programmes: patient dignity, safety, and wellbeing guide every decision. Humility before expertise: every participant arrives prepared to learn. Quality before growth: we expand only while maintaining the highest standards. Impact before numbers: success is measured by stronger professionals, stronger partnerships, and stronger communities.
What makes YKMI different?
What distinguishes YKMI is not simply where learning takes place, but how it is designed. International participants work alongside Ugandan healthcare professionals and students as members of integrated healthcare teams, as active learners in professionally supervised environments rather than observers. This creates reciprocal learning, and communities remain central throughout as respected partners, not training sites.
